Evergreen, Colorado

Daniel Walker’s first reply was an insult.

A fellow local business reached out to Walker Co. Heating & Air to offer a service, the ordinary kind of B2B pitch shops make to each other. Daniel answered immediately. This is what he sent.

The reply

Who he is, in one text

Another small business offered Walker Co. a B2B service. Daniel did not ask what it was, did not decline it, and did not let it sit. He went straight to name-calling.

“Don't tell me what to do ass hole mind your own business”

A peer reached out to help his company, and his first instinct was to call them an asshole and tell them to mind their own business. That is contempt, not a boundary. People who run a shop this way treat a neighbor the same way they will treat you the moment you push back.

How small shops actually work

Local businesses partner so both of them stay open.

They send each other work

A furnace company that does not do ducts, a plumber who does not touch boilers, an electrician who is booked out. The normal reply is a name and a phone number, not a slam of the door.

A no is still a conversation

Plenty of owners pass on a pitch. They say they are covered, or not interested, and both sides move on. That is how you stay a neighbor in a town the size of Evergreen.

Partners cover each other

Overflow on a cold week, a second set of hands, a trade you do not keep on the truck. Small businesses stay alive by helping the shop down the road, because next winter the favor comes back.
